1. Understand your business goals
Your business goals should drive your social media strategy, not the other way around. Your business plan will likely have both short-term and long-term goals you would like to achieve. If you are a local business that is focused on serving local customers then your social media strategy should be geographically focused to your key audience. Consider

I’ve heard people saying that social media takes up too much of their time. It's true it does take time to post but social media tools can save you time. Through the use of automation tools such as If This Then That (IFTTT) and Social Management tools such as Hootsuite you can work more efficiently and still take advantage of all the advantages that social media has to offer your business.
3. Don't forget to listen too!
Social Media is great for engaging and building your audience. Posting updates is great but don;t forget to take time and "listen" too by reading what your audience is posting. Twitter lists are great for keeping tracking of what your customer's are discussing. By listening to your audience it will be easier to engage in the discussions and topics you have in common.
4. I must have accounts for all the Social Networks!
While it is good to have exposure to a larger audience, if you are a small business or only have a small team then it is unlikely you will be able to maintain more then a few social networks. Starting with Twitter and Facebook is a pretty safe move and it is relatively easy to engage an audience. However, your audience may not be as active on these platforms as others such as LinkedIN or Pinterest.
